The N0MES CDT is creating a place-based research and training environment led by the University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores University, bringing together stakeholders across disciplines and focusing on maritime energy generation, distribution and environmental impact. The CDT tackles a wide range of challenges combining science, national goals, and industry needs.
The aim of the Net Zero Hour Seminar Series is to facilitate cross-institutional student knowledge exchange, broaden horizons to other PGRs and academics and provide insights into cutting edge science.

Kai Simpson, PhD Student, N0MES CDT
Kai Simpson, undergraduate and master’s student from the University of Liverpool, joined the N0MES CDT in October 2025, with partner NeuWave, following a successful interview process with CDT supervisor Dr Jonny Higham, from the School of Environmental Sciences.
Kai has gone from strength to strength since beginning his PhD and works closely with his industry collaborator, visiting their offices in Manchester on a regular basis.

Kai’s project is entitled ‘Machine Learning–Based Oceanographic Site Similarity Modelling for Automated SWAN Deployment in Offshore Wind Applications’ and he hopes to use his expertise in oceanography and deep learning applications for offshore wind to see how he can apply this knowledge to wave modelling. This partnership is helping to bridge the gap between academia and industry, and he is excited to make a meaningful impact in this field.
Kai says, Originally, I come from an economics background and had a particular interest in the mathematical descriptions of human behaviour from an environmental perspective. Since then, I have completed a master’s at the University of Liverpool, which culminated in research examining the relationship between air particulate composition, deprivation and respiratory health across Liverpool using machine learning. Now, I am within the N0MES CDT, looking at AI-driven oceanic wave modelling with a focus on machine learning led site similarity for automated SWAN model implementation.

Abstract
Jana is the CEO and Founder of NeuWave. She presents a career trajectory from academia where she developed AI clustering models within medical research, to combining cutting-edge methods with high societal impact within Oceanography. She then went on to found her company NeuWave, inspired by her ambition to take her research to industry level.
Jana talks about the challenges of pre-boom AI development, safety-critical maritime decision-making, using NeuWave’s R&D advances. Joining her N0MES PhD student Kai, will present his work on machine learning-driven clustering of wave regimes, demonstrating how these methods are being applied within NeuWave’s broader research agenda.
