On the 17th and 18th of June, The University of Liverpool hosted the 8th Marine Technology Postgraduate Conference (MTPC), bringing together academics, industry experts, and early career researchers to share invaluable insights into the future of the maritime sector.
A host of talks and posters were presented, covering a wide range of topics from ship design and marine renewables to port management and autonomous marine navigation.

A multitude of UK universities are members of MarRI-UK, so the conference was a brilliant opportunity to meet academics and postgraduate students from universities including Newcastle, Southampton, Strathclyde, and UCL to name a few. The MTPC is just one example of the many opportunities we are given in N0MES to meet, learn from, and exchange knowledge with our peers across the country.
I was lucky enough to be asked to chair the student committee, and I was able to play a key role in the planning and organisation of the conference, gaining invaluable experience along the way. It was also my job to recruit the rest of the N0MES cohort to take part in the three-minute-thesis (3MT) competition! A 3MT competition challenges postgraduate researchers to compile their whole thesis into one three-minute oral presentation – this is harder than it sounds! Everyone who took part did brilliantly, and for many it was a nice introduction to presenting in front of a large group of strangers for the first time.
As a cohort, we all found the two days really interesting and a great opportunity to build relationships with researchers from similar disciplines, and we are all looking forward to the next chance we have to show off our research.
A big thank you to The University of Liverpool for hosting the conference, and of course MarRI-UK and all the academics from the member universities who played a really important role in the planning committee.
