SUMMARY:Net-Zero Hour - June: Emerging Voices in Net Zero Research
DESCRIPTION:Net Zero Hour – Emerging Voices in Net-Zero Research\n\n\nJoin us for Net Zero Hour: Emerging Voices in Net-Zero Research\, an engaging seminar showcasing innovative research from three emerging researchers tackling some of the key challenges in the transition to a sustainable and resilient future. \nAbstract \nThis session will explore cutting-edge work across offshore renewable energy\, coastal climate resilience\, and green hydrogen technologies. Topics include improving the performance and efficiency of floating offshore wind farms through advanced wake-flow simulations\, investigating the use of dredged sediments in coastal nature-based solutions to enhance resilience and biodiversity under sea level rise\, and developing additively manufactured electrodes for direct seawater electrolysis to support sustainable hydrogen production. \nTogether\, these presentations highlight the interdisciplinary research and technological innovation helping to shape the future of net zero energy\, infrastructure\, and coastal systems. \n\nPresenters \nHear from Quisha Graham\, Tom Fearon and Hruthik Vandanapu\, three N0MES CDT postgraduate researchers who will be delivering an overview and update on their current PhD research. \n \nREGISTER HERE.

SUMMARY:Net-Zero Hour - May: Barriers for Decarbonisation Investments in Maritime SMEs
DESCRIPTION:Event Overview: \nBarriers for Decarbonisation Investments in Maritime SMEs \nAbstract \nMaritime decarbonisation has become a critical priority in achieving global net zero targets\, yet small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face disproportionate challenges in adopting low-carbon technologies. This study presents a structured literature review that identifies and synthesises the key barriers influencing decarbonisation investment decisions in maritime SMEs. Drawing on existing research across maritime transport\, energy efficiency\, and sustainability transitions\, the study categorises barriers into thematic dimensions\, including financial\, technological\, organisational\, and regulatory factors. The review highlights that these barriers are often interrelated and create compounded risks that hinder investment decision-making under uncertainty. Furthermore\, the findings reveal a lack of integrated frameworks in the literature to systematically prioritise these barriers. By consolidating and structuring existing knowledge\, this study provides a foundation for future empirical and methodological research\, particularly in applying decision-support tools to enhance decarbonisation strategies within the maritime SME sector. \nPresenter\nChia-Hsun Chang\, Reader (Associate Professor) in Maritime Logistics\, Liverpool John Moores University \n \nREGISTER HERE. \n\n

SUMMARY:Net-Zero Hour- April
DESCRIPTION:Event Overview: \nMaking Waves: Data\, AI\, and the Future of Wave Analysis \nAbstract \nJana is the CEO and Founder of NeuWave. She presents a career trajectory from academia where she developed AI clustering models within medical research\, to combining cutting-edge methods with high societal impact within Oceanography. She then went on to found her company NeuWave\, inspired by her ambition to take her research to industry level. \nJana talks about the challenges of pre-boom AI development\, safety-critical maritime decision-making\, using NeuWave’s R&D advances. Joining her N0MES PhD student Kai\, will present his work on machine learning-driven clustering of wave regimes\, demonstrating how these methods are being applied within NeuWave’s broader research agenda. \nPresenter\nKai Simpson\, PhD Student at N0MES CDT and his industry partner Jana Stella\, CEO and Founder of NeuWave

SUMMARY:Net Zero Hour - March
DESCRIPTION:Event Overview: \nMersey Tidal Power: The Road to Net-Zero \nWe are pleased to invite you to the fifth instalment of ‘Net-Zero Hour‘\, hosted by the The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Net Zero Maritime Energy Solutions (N0MES). Our next seminar will be delivered by Dr Shaun Benzon\, Head of Project Development for Mersey Tidal. Please feel free to forward this invitation on to any parties that will find this relevant or interesting. \nAbstract \nGenerating up to a gigawatt of clean\, predictable\, electricity\, with low production costs\, Mersey Tidal Power would create thousands of jobs while supporting UK energy security and the road to net zero.  And as sea levels rise\, a barrage across the Mersey would provide vital flood protection for the many communities living along the river.  Already in the planning process\, the project would use proven technology to deliver clean energy for over 120 years. This presentation will provide an overview of this iconic infrastructure project as well as the current status of the development. \nPresenter\n\n \nShaun Benzon\nHead of Project Development\nDr Shaun Benzon – Head of Project Development – Mersey Tidal – Liverpool City Region. Shaun has been Head of this since 2019\, leading on the delivery of technical and environmental workstreams of the project\, collaboration with international organisations and supporting the wider promotion of the project. With 14 years’ experience in energy projects including hydropower\, tidal power and wave energy as well as R&D\, modelling\, testing and manufacturing. Shaun is on the advisory panels for the Cardiff University EPSRC TARGET (Tidal range schemes as configurable grid-scale energy storage facilities) and Jacobs SMART Grant VLHT (Very Low Head Turbine) projects.
