How to apply
N0MES researchers will receive:
Maintenance grant / Stipend
A maintenance grant of £20,780 per year for your living costs, which is paid to you in monthly instalments. This may rise by a small percentage annually to cover increased living costs.
Support for tuition fees
This is currently £4,786 per year, which covers UK students’ full fees only. Please note: tuition fees for non-UK students are considerably higher (currently £31,250 per year at the University of Liverpool and £18,250 per year at Liverpool John Moores University). International students will be required to fund the difference themselves, unless stated otherwise in the advert.
Application process
The N0MES CDT application process varies depending on which of the two universities the supervisor is based.
Aspiring N0MES researchers should find a PhD vacancy on our FindaPhD show case page, or on the ‘Live Projects‘ section below, note the lead university, then follow the application process below, as appropriate.
For University of Liverpool:
- Find a current PhD vacancy on the CDT’s FindaPhD show case page [follow link].
- Complete and submit the University of Liverpool application form.
- Once assessed, applications will be forwarded by the University’s postgraduate recruitment team to the CDT for shortlisting with the academic supervisor/s within 3 days of receiving the application.
- The CDT will invite shortlisted candidates to an online interview within 14 days of the submission deadline and notify unsuccessful candidates via email.
- We aim to hold all interviews within 28 days of the deadline.
- We aim to let successful candidates know the outcome of their application within 6 weeks days of the submission deadline.

There are several sections on the University of Liverpool’s application form that you will require additional information for, as follows: –

For Liverpool John Moores University:
- Find a current PhD vacancy on our FindaPhD show case page, or from the ‘Live Projects’ list below.
- Follow the important application instructions on the individual FindaPhD adverts.
- Interviews are normally held within 14 days of the submission deadline. If you have not heard anything by then, please assume your application was not successful.
- We aim to notify successful candidates within 21 days of the submission deadline.
Studentship award
N0MES CDT researchers will receive a fully funded studentship award which includes:
Living costs paid
A minimum stipend at the current UKRI rate, for your living costs which is paid in regular instalments.
Tuition paid
Tuition fees (for UK students only unless stated otherwise in the specific project advert).
Research support paid
Research support for conferences, consumables, travel, etc.
Eligibility criteria
International, EU student eligibility and student fees for EU and EEA students who do not meet the EPRSC eligibility* requirements are classified as international students. Eligibility is based on residency not nationality. EU and EAA students with settled status will be classified as Home students.
Unless stated otherwise international students will be required to fund the difference between international and home student tuition fees. For 2025 fees for international students are currently in the region of: £31,250 per year at the University of Liverpool and £18,250 per year at Liverpool John Moores University.
