Researching the Net Zero Shipyard

Ahmed Balata – Cohort 1 postgraduate researcher at the N0MES CDT – and his supervisors, Andy Plater, Çağatay Iris and Joe Spencer, spent a very enjoyable Monday morning touring the Cammell Laird shipyard in Birkenhead last month!

Ahmed is working with Cammell Laird to determine energy use and carbon emissions across its ship repair and shipbuilding activities.  His research aims to identify where interventions can be made to reduce the shipyard’s carbon footprint and to assist Cammell Laird in becoming a world leader in Net Zero ship repair.

Ahmed’s industrial supervisor, Tom Curwell, guided the N0MES team across the shipyard, providing an overview of the estate, its assets, its operations, its workforce and its strategy.  The tour included the largest dry dock (289m long) and the immense construction hall in which the new Mersey Ferry is coming together.

Ahmed said “Visiting Cammell Laird Shipyard was an incredible opportunity to explore its extensive facilities and gain a deeper understanding of its shipbuilding and repair capabilities. From witnessing cutting-edge technologies to exploring ways to reduce carbon footprints, this visit was a great step towards supporting cleaner and greener shipbuilding industry. A big thank you to the team for their hospitality and expertise!”

Andy added “We’re really enjoying this opportunity to work with Cammell Laird in addressing a critical net zero challenge.  Ahmed faces a complex task but is well supported and facilitated in taking his research project forward.”
